A Few Things for Friday

1. Pinterest. Not sure if I am late to the party here but I just got an invite and am blown away by the beauty an inspiration on the site. It is a collection of boards where you can pin (get it?) items from the internet and group them together. It can be anything from clothes you like to inspiration for decorating your home.

There is also a social component in which you can follow other peoples boards and look at what they are pinning. At this point, you can join by signing up and waiting or getting an invite from someone who is already a member. 2. The Runner’s Kitchen wrote a post that is really thought provoking about the idea of exercising so you can eat a piece of cake (or ice cream or a donut) and not have guilt about eating “bad” foods. It is the combination of guilt and exercise that is teetering on disordered eating.

Exercise (especially running) makes me feel empowered, strong, and helps with stress. I do not do it for vanity (even though I would rather look toned than not) or so I do not feel bad about myself if I snack or eat dessert. If food was my sole motivation for working out, it would be difficult to continue to do it.

Do you agree that this type of motivation with food is borderline disordered or is this a factor for you in working out?

  1. I love Pinterest!! It's terribly addicting. My boards are here Pinterest – jillconyers

    I don't run to eat but I know a lot of people that do. I think it's fine if not taken to the extreme and if it motivates you do eat healthy I say go for it. I'm curious to see what others say.

    Running empowers me too. It makes me feel like I can do anything and that is one of my biggest motivators.

  2. I have actually been working on getting my resting heart rate down. Now I am getting concerned (both vanity and otherwise) about my stomach. I run with no back troubles and want to keep it that way.

    I'll also go ahead and mention that, since I have bumped up to longer runs and am wearing a hydration pack, I've been prioritizing Kegel exercises.

    Gee. That was a blunt way to introduce myself. I run for health – mental and physical. I agree that focusing exclusively on appearance and trying to look a certain way is absolute self-sabotage in the long run, in regards to self esteem and health.

  4. My sister sent me a pintrest link a couple of months ago and I have found the site amazing!

    I am concentrating on overall fitness – making sure I balance my running with something else. Cross training.

    And I find the run to eat theory very interesting. My husband participates in it a lot. I am not perfect, but think that if I am going to put in the time to run, I should probably not eat 6 pieces of cake or the point is really moot!

  6. Great thoughts…I think that I work out for a combination of vanity (trying to lose weight and look better), me time, and how I feel when it is over…there is nothing like the exercise high.

  7. This is the first I've heard of pinterest. I will have to check it out. I run for the me time and for the competition I have with myself. I like the sense of accomplishment that runs give me. I also run to spend time with my family…my dad, lil sis, baby sis, and SIL all run as well. Thanks for hopping by my blog!

  8. Hey there new friend!!! I'm glad we found each others blog! I have never heard of interest before.

    I started running to help with the food addiction, but it soon became more than that. The more I run, the more I naturally feel like not eating junk! Definitely empowering. I am now trying to pick up the pace a little bit!
