My department at work was eliminated and I was just told that my last day is Friday.
I am so sick with the plague (otherwise known as the head cold that could bring down civilizations) that I can barely react to this news.
I am a long-term employment type of gal and worked at my former job for four and a half years. There are lots of great memories and people who I hope to keep in touch with.
So what to do now?
Losing your job during one of the worse economic times in the past few decades is not ideal. Losing your job when your spouse is a fulltime student is even less so. So instead of curling up in the fetal position and feeling sorry for myself, I will be proactive.
This past year of working my butt off from Couch-to-5K to running a half marathon has given me the confidence to branch out. To strive for something greater. Did I love my last job and see myself doing it forever? Not really. Does this trying situation give me the opportunity to try something new? I hope so.
It is a lucky coincidence that a political junky is in need of employment during an election year in a swing state in a swing area that is bound to need paid staffers. It is also lucky that my new found interest in social media seems to be a growing industry that may have some openings in Central Florida.
Moving Forward
I need to update my resume and reach out to all of my contacts. Here is to hoping that someone in my extended network knows of an opening. Until then, I will keep my head up and keep moving forward. One foot in front of the other.
Have you been negatively effected by the economic downturn?
Do you know of any job openings in Central Florida? If so, please feel free to send them my way.
Oh Dina, I am so sorry! But I must say I’m SO impressed with your attitude. I would certainly be in the fetal position right now.
I’m going to keep my eyes and ears open for you. Would you want to work for a specific party/candidate or more in media position? I’ll be looking everywhere for you and sending all sorts of positive job hunting vibes your way!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
I am really open to anything but politically, a Democratic candidate would be the best fit. Obama for America is still hiring field staff and they do not have a paid person in Polk yet. I am really open to anything at this point.

Same here – what are you looking for? I have a couple friends that are lobbyists (although Republican), but they would likely know of good openings.

Thank you!
Most of my political experience is with organizing but I have done campaign work. I’m open to new things. My last job was in logistics with shipping and inventory management which is about as interesting as it sounds.

The exact same thing happened to me last year! I considered it a blessing in disguise, though. I didn’t like what I was doing and I was able to take some time to decide what I really want to do. It was rough and I definitely know where you’re coming from…hang in there and try not to let yourself get too down! It sounds like you have a good attitude though
maybe take some time to do some fun things you didn’t have time for while you were working…that’s how I’ve kept myself busy! Best of luck!

Thanks! I’m glad to hear things turned out well for you.
I do want to take sometime to find something that is a better fit. My last position was very repetitive and required zero creativity. If I can find something that is more varied and tad more exciting, it would indeed be a blessing.

oh, and let me know if you want to send me your husband’s resume for jobs too

Yes, I have to remind him about that. He mentioned he needed to update it.

Dina…I can’t believe this!
I’m keeping my eyes and ears open, of course.

Yeah it was a shock and it’s hard when you get comfortable. Hopefully it is all for the best.

I am sorry for the layoff but I think its great that you are looking at what you would like to do in the future. I think it sounds like you have a good plan and I hope you get something quick that you will enjoy!
